Why is my belly getting bigger after 40?
If your belly is getting bigger after 40 even though you’re eating the same food, you’re not imagining it, and you’re not lazy. Loads of women notice this in their 40s. Here’s what’s usually going on, in plain words.
Why does fat move to the belly after 40?
As you get closer to menopause, your oestrogen starts to drop. Oestrogen used to send fat to your hips and thighs. With less of it around, your body tends to store more fat around your middle instead.
Why does eating the same not work anymore?
From your 30s onwards, you slowly lose muscle unless you work to keep it. Muscle burns energy even while you rest. Less muscle means your body needs a bit less food than before, so the same plate can now be slightly too much.
Can bad sleep and stress make it worse?
Yes. Poor sleep makes you hungrier the next day and pulls you toward sugary snacks. Stress raises a hormone called cortisol, which is linked to storing fat around the belly. When you’re waking at 3am and running on empty, your belly often shows it.
What actually helps?
- Eat protein at every meal, like eggs, fish, chicken, beans or Greek yoghurt. It keeps you full and helps protect your muscle.
- Add more fibre from vegetables, beans, lentils and oats. It fills you up and feeds your gut.
- Lift something a bit heavy two or three times a week. Your own body weight counts. It’s the best way to hold on to muscle.
- Go easy on alcohol, especially in the evening. It adds empty calories and messes with your sleep.
- Protect your sleep like it’s an appointment you can’t miss.
None of this is about starving yourself. It’s about feeding the body you have right now.
